There are a number of trails in the Coopers Gap/Chestnut Springs area that are appropriate for hiking as well as biking. Whaaa?! I wished I had made it a two day’er instead of a one day’er. Before backpacking I camped (really just slept in my vehicle) in the primitive camping area at nearby Cheaha State Park. The old Steam Locomotives would stop here to fill up withwater from the pond beside the tracks. Lol! On average it takes 1 minutes to complete this trail. The owners provided campsites and firewood for $5per night at the old CCC Campground and Day or overnightparking for a $2 donation. To reach the trailhead from the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg, drive 13 miles south along Newfound Gap Road to the Newfound Gap parking area. We waived them on. Overall I would recommend this trail to anyone looking for a challenging hike with spectacular views. I scrambled to the top of the cliffs with a great view and walked along the rim of the chasm- far below was another 30 ft falls, then a 10 ft falls and a 30 foot chute. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains begins from the Newfound Gap parking area. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. You would also see an old whistle stopcommunity called Weathers (Station), 1/2 mile to the west onCR 12. Hiking in the mountains sounds wonderful and romantic doesn’t it? There are several fire rings and water source at that site. We were so tired we could barely change out of our clothes and into our base layers. Day Two: Call 911! the views were amazing. It’s 5 hikers who were about a half mile ahead of us they day before and were no headed back too. They were young and they soon left us behind because they had 24 miles to cover that day. Winding through stands of hardwood, the trail passes near the remains of a small community abandoned in the early 1930s when rural life succumbed to the Depression. That also looks like a great place to camp, and offers honor system payment and convenient location to the trail. Up to the Bluff was very steep and difficult, and trail makings were hard to find near the top. One of the best section hikes in the state.
